How many treatments are needed?
Generally, a series of five treatments are performed over four weeks; however, for some, additional sessions may be necessary to achieve the desired look.
Are there any side effects?
Typically, photo rejuvenation is a safe and quick procedure with very little risk. However, some patients may appear to have a sunburn for a few hours following treatment and targeted areas may stand out being a bit darker than other areas for a couple of days. It is likely hair growth will be affected in the treated area as well, but only for a short period of time. Other rare side effects may include swelling, blistering, unwanted changes in pigmentation, scarring and infection. Also, if you have existing viral infections, such as herpes or shingles, they may be activated as a result of treatment.
What conditions have shown to respond best to this treatment?
Photofacial treatments have proven effective in treating a number of conditions, including:
- Facial flushing
- Red chests and necks
- Brown spots
- Sun damage
- Enlarged pores
- Spider veins
What downtime should I expect?
Patients can usually return to normal daily activities, including wearing makeup, immediately following the treatment. We do recommend avoiding exposure to sunlight however, as this could cause unwanted pigmentation changes. You may experience temporary redness and swelling after the procedure and in rare instances, bruising and blistering, but this shouldn’t keep you from returning to your normal routine.
What can I expect for recovery?
Your skin will be quite sensitive following the treatment, so you should avoid sun exposure while undergoing photo rejuvenation. If swelling occurs, you can use cold compresses to reduce the swelling. The shattered melanin that rises to the surface and appears and dark spots will flake off within a week.
How soon can I expect results?
You should notice results within the first few treatments.
How long does treatment last?
Each session lasts between 20-30 minutes depending on the area(s) being treated. Five sessions are usually scheduled over a four week time period.
Am I a good candidate for photo rejuvenation?
Lighter skinned people who do not have a history of excessive tanning or the use of self-tanning products are generally good candidates for this treatment. We will help you determine if photo rejuvenation is right for you.
How should I prepare for treatment?
If you are taking Accutane®, you should discontinue its use for six months prior to treatment. Also, any Retin-A®, glycolic acid and alpha-hydroxy acid products should be discontinued for 3-5 days prior to treatment. In addition, you should avoid sunless tanning and extensive sun exposure for three weeks prior to your appointment. Speak to your doctor if you are taking aspirin, antibiotics or blood thinners to discuss the possible side effects of treatment. If you have sores or are being treated for infections, we will have to reschedule your appointment until you are completely healed.
