Laser Hair Removal Treatment Elmhurst, IL

Is unwanted body hair keeping you from the silky, smooth skin you desire? Are you tired of constantly shaving or painful waxing? Laser hair removal is a quick, non-invasive way to remove unwanted hair on your face, legs, bikini line, underarms, back and stomach for both men and women.

We utilize the most advanced lasers available to ensure you receive optimum results. During your consultation appointment, we will determine which type of laser will be used, discuss the details of treatment, realistic expectations for your treatment, any risks involved and the cost of laser hair removal.

How does laser hair removal work?

The keys to laser hair removal are the melanin in the hair shaft and the hair follicle where the hair grows and is anchored. We set the wavelength of the laser to match the melanin in your hair (melanin gives our hair and skin its color). We then deliver brief pulses of laser light energy down onto your unwanted hair. The melanin in the hairs absorbs the laser energy, which instantly converts to heat. This heat travels down the hair shaft into the hair follicle where it damages or fully destroys the follicle, preventing it from growing hair in the future.

Where can I have laser hair removal done?

A better question would be “Where can I NOT have laser hair removal?” Laser hair removal can be done just about anywhere on the body with these exceptions: the male genitalia, inside the ears, and inside the nostrils.

At Allure Skin & Laser our most popular areas are the bikini line, the underarms, legs, back, upper lip, sideburns, and the chin. Some men opt for full-face hair removal; others remove all of their chest hair. Many women are choosing the Brazilian option of full hair removal across the pubic area.

How many laser hair removal treatments will I need?

As discussed above, each of our hairs is constantly moving through the different phases of their lifespan. To be effective, laser energy must catch the unwanted hair in the anagen/growth phase. This is when the hair shaft is still actively anchored in the hair follicle, so the laser energy can travel down the shaft into the follicle and damage or destroy the follicle. The trick to successful laser hair removal is to catch as many unwanted hairs as possible in the growth phase. At Allure Skin & Laser, our experience is that between six and 10 treatments achieves the degree of permanent hair reduction that satisfies most patients. Each session needs to be spaced from 4-6 weeks apart. Annual maintenance sessions can catch any follicles that were only partially damaged and returned to growing hair.

Is there anything I need to do to prepare for my session?

At Allure Skin & Laser, our lasers work best when there is a high contrast between the color of the patient’s skin and his or her hair color. So, avoiding sun is important before your appointment. Here are some things to do to prepare:

  • Avoid plucking, waxing, and electrolysis — For the laser energy to get down into the follicle, the hair needs to be actively anchored in the follicle. Plucking, waxing, and electrolysis all disturb the follicle. Shaving is fine, as it doesn’t affect hair in the follicle.
  • Avoid sun exposure — If you have a tan, you need to let it fade before coming in for your session. As a rule, we advise patients to not have any sun exposure on the areas with unwanted hair for 4-6 weeks prior to their session.
  • Clean your skin — The treatment areas need to be free from cosmetics, lotions, and creams. If you’ve applied deodorant and are having your underarms treated, we will remove it prior to your session.
  • Certain skincare products — Certain anti-aging skincare products can cause irritation when interacting with the laser energy. These include alphahydroxy acid, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, and others. We’ll discuss these with you and tell you want to avoid for a few days before and after your appointment.

Are there risks with laser hair removal?

Our Allure Skin & Laser patients love getting rid of the hair for good. It is a safe, effective treatment, and it is done across the globe. Lasers have been used for laser hair removal for almost 30 years, and the process was extensively tested prior to becoming commercially available and receiving approval from the FDA.

We apply topical numbing cream to the areas to be treated to keep you comfortable. The most common side effects after treatment include skin irritation, such as redness and slight swelling on the treatment sites. This usually passes within a few hours.

Is there any downtime after my laser hair removal session?

Most patients return to work or their normal activities immediately after their sessions. It’s important to wear sunscreen to protect your skin after the laser treatments, but that’s about it.

What to Expect During Treatment

Laser hair removal is performed in our office and can take anywhere between a few minutes to hours to complete, depending on the area(s) being treated. We apply local anesthetic to the treatment area to help with any discomfort. Most people compare the sensation of the laser pulses to the feeling of being snapped by a rubber band. You are welcome to take over-the-counter pain medications before or after the procedure as well if you have a low pain tolerance.

What to Expect After Treatment

Much like a sunburn, your skin will be red and irritated for a couple of days. In addition to cold compresses and ice packs, you can soothe your skin with aloe vera. Protect your skin throughout the day by wearing sunscreen and be sure to reapply often if you are outdoors for an extended period of time.

We strive to achieve the most optimum results for each of our patients and while permanent hair reduction is common, we cannot guarantee it for everyone. Results vary from person to person and repeat treatments may be necessary.
