What are Dermal Fillers?Dermal Fillers IL

Dermal fillers are true to their name — when injected beneath a crease or area of volume loss they simply fill in the depression and push the skin back upward. Dermal fillers work on what are known as “static” wrinkles. These are wrinkles caused by sun damage, declining collagen production, personal habits such as smoking, and other environmental factors. Static wrinkles show themselves at all times.

Dermal fillers are usually classified as either “natural” or “synthetic.” Natural fillers, such as all of the Restylane® line, are made primarily with hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the human body that is responsible for hydrating, plumping, and firming the skin. It does this by binding with nearby water molecules.

Synthetic fillers have man-made elements, such as calcium microspheres (Radiesse®), that provide structural support and often trigger the body to produce new amounts of collagen. This delivers results from two different actions.

Smoothing out folds and wrinkles can make an enormous difference in a person’s appearance and sometimes even make them look several years younger. Dermal fillers are used to help reverse the signs of aging and provide patients with a more natural, youthful appearance compared to surgical face lifts.

Who is a Candidate for Dermal Filler Injections?

Whether dermal fillers are right for you depends on the wrinkles or lines you’re seeking to address. If your wrinkles occur on the mid to lower face, these are static wrinkles. Smile lines (running from the nose down to the corners of the mouth), marionette lines (running from the corners of the mouth downwards), parentheses lines (framing the sides of the mouth), and barcode lines (vertical lines on the lips) are all examples of static wrinkles. Dermal fillers will erase these wrinkles.

However, if the wrinkles and lines you seek to remove are on the upper third of your face, dermal fillers aren’t the way to go. Wrinkles on the upper third of the face occur due to muscle contractions under the skin when we make expressions such as frowning or showing surprise. After hundreds of thousands of these contractions, coupled with thinning skin, wrinkles start to form on the surface skin when these expressions are made. These are crow’s feet at the outside of the eye, the 11s between the eyebrows, and forehead lines. Neuromodulators (Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin®) are used to erase these wrinkles, known as “dynamic wrinkles.” When injected, the neuromodulator relaxes the muscle so the wrinkle on the surface skin doesn’t form. Dermal fillers have no effect on dynamic wrinkles, just as neuromodulators don’t work on static wrinkles on the lower face.

Different Types of  Dermal Fillers

Radiesse IL Radiesse® is an injectable filler used to reduce the appearance of facial folds and wrinkles, as well as used for lip augmentation. Radiesse® is different from other fillers because it is made from calcium-based microspheres that help reconstruct the base of the skin by stimulating collagen production, ultimately providing the longest-lasting results. Radiesse® is a safe and effective procedure providing patients with results that can typically last from six months to one year.

Belotero Balance®

beloteroBelotero Balance® is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is specifically designed to integrate into your skin and mold itself to your unique facial contours. This makes it an ideal choice for both tough areas like nasolabial folds (smile lines) as well as delicate areas like vertical lip lines. For a youthfulness that is uniquely yours, choose Belotero Balance!

restylaneRestylane® is a crystal-clear, non-animal, biodegradable gel based on a natural substance that is used for the treatment of wrinkles and lip augmentation. The injected gel gives natural volume under the wrinkle, which is lifted up and smoothed out. Usually, only one treatment is necessary for optimum results. The result is instantaneous and produces a long-lasting, natural enhancement that is gentle to your skin. The effects of Restylane® can last up to one year. Treating wrinkles with Restylane® is fast and safe – and leaves no scars or other traces on the face.

Restylane® Lyft

Restylane LyftRestylane® Lyft is an injectable dermal filler used to reduce facial lines and wrinkles. It is a non-animal filler made of hyaluronic acid, which is naturally found in the body’s connective tissue. Because it is resilient, it can readily adapt and mold to the contours of the face. No skin test is needed prior to administering Restylane® Lyft. The filler poses no risk of allergic reaction. It is also one of the longest lasting dermal filler because Restylane® Lyft contains more hyaluronic molecules.

bellafilBellafill® is a dermal filler that is different than many injectables, which are based on natural or synthetic materials which are eventually broken down and absorbed by the body. Bellafill® is based on microspheres which are not absorbed in the body, and instead stimulate your body’s own production of collagen, supporting your skin for long-lasting results.

Sculptra® Aesthetics

sculptraSculptra Aesthetic gradually replaces lost collagen Collagen is a key structural component that keeps skin youthful looking and smooth. As you age, your body’s collagen production decreases, and you may begin to see wrinkles. Sculptra® Aesthetic (injectable poly-L-lactic acid) works to correct shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds,* as it replaces lost collagen, which can help provide a refined, more youthful looking appearance. Sculptra Aesthetic works to replace lost collagen in a series of treatments administered by a Sculptra trained physician. On average, 3 injection sessions are needed over a period of a few months. The number of injection sessions and the number of injections per session vary from person to person. Sculptra Aesthetic works within the deep dermis. Within the deep dermis, your skin’s structure is reinforced as Sculptra Aesthetic helps to replace lost collagen. This reinforced collagen structure provides a foundation that gradually restores the look of fullness of your shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds* that has been depleted over time. The result? Sculptra Aesthetic is different because it gradually and subtly corrects these facial wrinkles. This can provide a refined, more youthful looking appearance that can last up to 2 years.**

Side effects of Sculptra Aesthetic may include injection site discomfort, redness, bruising, bleeding, itching, and swelling.

* Safety and effectiveness of Sculptra Aesthetic have not been evaluated in areas other than nasolabial wrinkles and folds in clinical trials.

**Individual results and treatment sessions may vary.

*** Based on pre-clinical evaluation in animals. Sculptra Aesthetic is thought to work in a similar process.

What are the Benefits of Dermal Fillers?

These non-invasive injections effectively erase lines and creases and fill areas of volume loss such as the cheeks. They instantly rejuvenate the face for a period of 6 to 9 months (Restylane® fillers) all the way up to 2 years (Sculptra®). Fillers make this rejuvenation happen without a single incision, suture, or minute of recovery time. Results are instant and an injection session at Allure takes just 15-20 minutes. What’s not to love?

What Issues Can Dermal Fillers Address?

At Allure Skin & Laser, we use dermal fillers on these lines and areas of volume loss:

  • Smile lines (from the nose to the corners of the mouth)
  • Parentheses lines (framing each side of the mouth)
  • Marionette lines (running from the corners of the mouth downward)
  • Barcode lines (vertical lines on the lips)
  • Volume loss in the cheeks
  • Volume loss in the lips
  • Undereye lines and hollows
  • Backs of the hands

How Often Will I Need to Have Dermal Fillers Injected?

The duration of your results depends upon the filler we use. With all dermal fillers, the patient’s metabolism eventually breaks down the filler and it is absorbed by the body. Restylane® fillers typically provide results from 6 to 9 months. Radiesse® lasts for 9 to 12 months. Sculptra® provides the longest results, lasting up to 2 years. When you’re here for your session, we’ll give you a good idea of how long you can expect your results to last.

What Our Patients Have to Say

“I love this place. They just know their stuff and have the best prices I’ve found in the area. They take really take good care of you… The girls that work around the office are always patient and helpful with any questions.” -Bridget F.

Are there any Risks Involved with Dermal Fillers?

As mentioned above, the typical after-effects with these products are slight redness and swelling at your injection sites. This passes in just a few hours. Occasionally, lumps can form, but this is a great thing about the Restylane® products we offer at Allure. If a lump develops, or if you don’t like the look of the area where Restylane® was injected, the hyaluronic acid can be instantly neutralized by the injection of an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This enzyme instantly breaks down the hyaluronic acid in these fillers.

Is there Recovery After these Sessions?

There isn’t any recovery or downtime. You may have some slight redness and swelling for a few hours at the injection sites, but that’s about it. You can return to work or your normal activities immediately.
