CoolSculpting Elmhurst, IL
Everyone has pockets of stubborn fat. Our bodies are good at protecting fat in certain areas, such as the abdomen, upper thighs, flanks, bra line, and the jowls under the chin. These pockets are next to impossible to target effectively with exercise or dietary restraint.
But at Allure Skin & Laser Center, we put that unwanted fat in the deep freeze with CoolSculpting.
CoolSculpting is a completely non-invasive method for removing from 20-25 percent of the fat in treatment areas.
What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting was the first non-invasive solution to removing unwanted pockets of fat. It was the invention of two Harvard scientists who had stumbled upon a relationship between cold temperatures and fat loss. Their initial study was about children eating popsicles and the development of dimples in their cheeks.
From there, CoolSculpting was developed.
The scientists discovered that human fat cells freeze at a higher temperature than the muscle and support tissue cells surrounding the fat. CoolSculpting uses panels that deliver controlled cooling downward into the treatment area; this freezes the fat cells but leaves the other tissue undamaged. This process kills around 20-25 percent of the fat in the treated areas, and the body then breaks down and flushes these cells away over the course of the next few weeks. With almost a quarter less fat in the treated areas, the patient’s contour slims.

How is CoolSculpting performed?
When you arrive at our Elmhurst offices, we put you in an angled treatment chair and explain the CoolSculpting process. Topical numbing isn’t necessary. The first step is to position the CoolSculpting panels over the target area. These panels deliver a light suction that draws the skin, underlying tissue, and fat up between two cooling panels. You’ll feel a pulling sensation, but it isn’t painful.
The next step is to set the cooling temperature and the CoolSculpting panels deliver cooling downward into the drawn-up tissue. At first, you’ll feel a serious cooling sensation, but then the area numbs, and the cooling freezes the fat cells. We repeat this process across the treatment area. A session can take from one to three hours, depending on the size of the treatment area. While the procedure is ongoing, you can read, watch videos, work on your laptop, or even take a nap!
After your procedure, your body gets to work eliminating the frozen/dead fat cells. This takes a few weeks, but you’ll end up with 20-25 percent less fat in the treatment area and a slimmer contour to show for it.
Would I be a good candidate for CoolSculpting?
There is some misconception about CoolSculpting with people thinking it can be used for weight loss. This is not the case. CoolSculpting is a body-contouring procedure meant to reduce fat in specific problem areas. We generally want our CoolSculpting patients to be within 10 percent of their ideal body weight.
Is CoolSculpting painful?
This isn’t a painful procedure. Patients feel a pulling sensation when the panels draw your skin and underlying tissue up. Then you feel intense cooling for a few minutes when the freezing is initiated. Patients say this feels very cold, but not painful. After a few minutes the area becomes numb and you don’t feel anything for the remainder of your session.
How long before I see results after my CoolSculpting session?
Your results with CoolSculpting are not immediate. This is because, while the fat cells have been frozen and are dying, it takes time for the body to remove them. Some patients say they begin to see changes in around three weeks, but the most dramatic results will show themselves after two months or so. And these results keep improving for up to six months.
How long will my CoolSculpting results last?
The process of freezing and killing fat cells is known as cryolipolysis. The fat cells frozen and killed do not regenerate: they are gone for good. The fat reduction is permanent. If you maintain a healthy lifestyle, your results will last forever. If you do gain weight, it usually tends to build elsewhere first.
Are there any side effects with CoolSculpting? Is it safe?
This is totally non-invasive. Patients usually have some temporary redness, swelling, bruising, and skin sensitivity at the treatment site. There can also be stinging. These sensations are caused by your skin reacting to the intense cold, but they pass within a week or so. Our Allure patients haven’t said these feelings and sensations keep them from returning to their normal routine or activities.
Although very rare, more serious side effects such as extreme pain, severe numbing, and bloating along the area of contact with the cooling panels is possible.
Overall, CoolSculpting has been performed millions of times around the world since its introduction in 2010. It has proven to be a safe, popular, effective way to reduce fat.
