Chemical Peel Elmhurst, IL
The skin is our body’s largest organ, consisting of three layers — the epidermis (outer layer), dermis (middle layer), and the fat layer. To fight off the damage from exposure to the elements, our skin is in a constant state of shedding and rebuilding. In fact, we shed our entire skin about once every month. This is called exfoliation.
At Allure Skin & Laser in Elmhurst, IL, we simply use chemical peels to hasten the exfoliation process. By delivering chemical agents that encourage some of the epidermis to shed, this reveals younger, healthier skin beneath.
What is a chemical peel?
Ever since the time of Cleopatra, humans have applied different substances to their facial skin to encourage turnover of the old, dead outer cells. The strength of the peeling agent dictates the strength of the chemical peel. There are light, medium, and deep peels (we don’t perform deep peels at Allure Skin & Laser). Mild peeling agents are usually naturally occurring acids from the alpha-hydroxy family, such as glycoloic acid (from sugar cane) and lactic acid (sour milk). Medium peels often use trichloroacetic acid. When applied, these peeling agents simply encourage the skin to slough off the outer layer, revealing healthier skin beneath.
What do chemical peels do?
During the process of a chemical peel, age spots, acne scars, fine lines, dead skin cells, and other imperfections are peeled away. The purpose of a peel is to erase imperfections and improve skin tone and texture.
What skin problems do chemical peels address?
At Allure Skin & Laser Center, we offer a variety of peels for a variety of skin conditions. Chemical peels in general help with these skin problems:
- Sun damage
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Texture issues
- Pigmentation problems
- Age spots
- Acne and acne scars
- Scaly patches
Chemical peels range from light depth to medium depth. Depending on your skin type and skin issues, your technician will recommend the best peel for you. Peels can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, lighten hyperpigmentation from sun damage, even skin tone, refine skin texture and help reduce large pore size.

Are chemical peels safe?
As mentioned above, chemical peels are nothing new. They are safe when done by professionals, such as the experienced, thoroughly trained team at Allure Skin & Laser. Getting a chemical peel from the place you get your nails done is a bad idea. The chemical agents can burn and scar if the person applying them doesn’t know what he or she is doing.
You need to remember the goal — to remove varying degrees of the outer layers of the skin. Because this exfoliation is forced to a deeper degree, there is some redness and tenderness after your treatment. Your face will feel a little dry. With a light peel, it will feel as if you have a light sunburn. With a medium peel, it will feel more like a medium sunburn. There will be some light flaking with light peels. Medium peels will have a little crusting of the skin. Other than that, our light and medium chemical peels are safe without any real side effects. Deep peels have a much more involved recovery and there can be danger of infection and scarring; that’s one reason we do not perform deep phenol peels at Allure Skin & Laser.
How long does a chemical peel take?
The actual process of getting one of our chemical peels takes around 30 minutes. We first thoroughly clean your skin and then apply the peeling agent. This is left on for a prescribed amount of time and is then neutralized and removed. Your skin is rinsed with cool water. For most peels, a calming mask is then applied. That’s the actual treatment.
From there, your skin will peel. For light peels, the skin will lightly flake for up to a week or so, but there isn’t wholesale peeling. For medium peels, more skin is removed during the actual peel, so there will be some light crusting for a few days afterwards. This will be followed by more involved peeling for a week to 10 days. This can be managed with moisturizer.
