What to Do When Life Gives You Spider Veins

Laser Vain Removal Elmhurst, ILHaving beautiful skin is something to be proud of, but sometimes it’s hard to obtain— especially when you have spider veins. Spider veins are a condition that causes your veins to become dilated which makes them appear closer to the surface and resemble that of a spider web.

With an estimated 80 million Americans that have either spider veins or a similar condition, varicose veins, if you have recently been diagnosed one thing is for certain: you are no anomaly. So, what causes spider veins and what are symptoms to look for?

What Causes Spider Veins?

Spider veins are the result of weak or damaged valves in the veins. When the valves don’t have the ability to open and allow blood back into the veins, it causes blood to back up and the veins to swell. Unfortunately, there is no one thing you can do to prevent yourself from getting spider veins. Factors of getting spider veins include:

  • Heredity
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Hormonal changes
  • A history of blood clots

What Are Symptoms of Spider Veins?

One thing to know about spider veins is that they don’t always come with symptoms (other than a strong visual appearance). However, patients who do exhibit symptoms typically experience:

  • Rash
  • Restless legs
  • Throbbing, cramping, or aching
  • Swelling
  • Ulcers
  • Itchiness

How Are Spider Veins Treated?

Here at Allure Skin and Laser, we typically treat spider veins with a combination of sclerotherapy and our 1064-nm Nd: YAG laser which helps to target the blood which sclerotherapy alone cannot. However, spider veins can be treated in a variety of additional ways including weight loss, compression stockings, an increase in exercises.

During your initial consultation, we will help you determine if sclerotherapy in conjunction with laser treatment is a suitable option for you. Schedule your vein consultation with our Elmhurst office today!
